CHAPTER NINETEEN

A solid thirty minutes later, we arrived at a new location — some hotel I didn’t bother to catch the name of. Rowan carried me up three flights of stairs and graciously set me down in front of the door. My legs wobbled, adjusting to being upright again. A soreness lingered in my muscles, remnants of the tethers that bound me to a wall. The pain had dispersed, leaving me in much better shape.

Rowan knocked once on the door, hard.

Ten seconds passed, then someone pulled the door open from the inside.

Rowan’s father took one look at our group, gaze snagging on my disheveled appearance and torn clothing for the briefest moment, and moved aside. We stepped into the room. The instant the path to me opened up, arms flung around my neck.

“Devon, are you alright?” Grandma Mel pulled away and looked me in the eyes, hers wide with concern. Removing one arm from around me, she plucked at the shredded remnants of my shirt. “What happened?”

Grandpa Rein approached and placed a hand on her shoulder, pulling her back to give me space. His own eyes shone with concern, lips pressed together in a controlled expression. Had he been younger, he would’ve joined the rescue mission. Of that, I had no doubt. But at their age there was no need for fighting; they were all I had left besides my sister. They needed to stay safe and healthy.

I flashed a half-hearted smile. “I’m fine. Nothing serious. A group of demons wanting me to tell them what he —“ I nodded towards Rowan. “— is working on. I told them they wouldn’t be getting any information from me, they took offense to that, and then realized I wasn’t joking when I told them abducting me was a mistake.” Tightness forced a grimace as I rolled my shoulders. “I’m fine, though, honestly. I’ve been through worse.”

The concern on my grandmother’s face deepened. Okay, so maybe that wasn’t the right thing to say.

“Demons wanting to know our plans?” Eleanor spoke up from across the room. She sat on a beige chaise lounge chair by the wide windows overlooking the city. “Did you notice anything else about them?”

My lips parted.

“She said one of them was able to sense the mark of our deal,” Rowan interrupted without so much as a glance my way. “She also said…” He grimaced. “That he escaped via teleportation and that their auras were similar to those of the female demon we fought.”

“Teleportation?” Rowan’s father frowned. “That’s a very specific skill set.”

Grandpa Rein nodded his agreement. “In all my years, I believe our family has only encountered one demon with that ability.”

“Hardly surprising,” Rowan’s father acknowledged with a nod. “The amount of discipline and focus required for that, and the risks if it goes wrong… For most, it’s hardly worth risking.”

My gaze drifted towards Rowan who remained silent. Never once had I seen him transform into his demonic nature and yet we’d fought side-by-side to kill someone who shifted into a demonic transformation — a fight that easily could have killed us both.
